-Concept for Glaurung. It‘s still bugging me that the Silmarillion demands ugly dragons. Drawing something ugly freaks me out. And I don‘t even think of „ugly“ when I think of dragons. I‘m eager to find a solution someday, though. I used a crocodile reference for this one because I thought there are so many dinosaur dragons and snake dragons around that I might need a new reptile for a change. So have a crocodile. Don‘t get me wrong, I like snake dragons. And I like crocodiles, crocodile lovers please don't feel offended.
-Gudrun. I sneaked into a Nibelungenlied seminar this semester, where I‘m the only one who never learned Middle High German before (poor English medievalist in training that I am), but hey, it‘s fun. I adore the Norse saga versions of the material, though, so have fantasy-ish-germaniac-ish designs and Norse names.
-Thus: Sigurd. Hell I‘m fond of my Sigurd, I just realized. Real men don‘t shave any part of their body except the face, dammit!
-Brynhildr. Who else. And she‘s a fucking valkyrie, you hear me, Nibelungenlied poet(s)?
-Ragnelle. Back to my own cup of tea. I mean, medieval ENGLISH literature, even though I bet she‘s of French origin. I LOVE the story of Gawain and Ragnelle, though, so let‘s just adopt her into cool 5th century Wales.
-Owein. Rocks because he‘s Welsh.
-Gruoch and McBeth from Gargoyles. Yay for Saturday morning cartoons! (in fact, I think it influenced me so much that I still don‘t think of Shakespeare‘s hero and heroine as evil… so Disney makes you see the good inside people!)
-Merlin. Actually ought to be Christian, not a druid. Yep, Geoffrey of Monmouth and Malory say so. Look it up. Now you know.
